why did u break up wit me
from an 812 phone number, Wednesday, March 18, 5:18 PM

Look, if Leila can answer that question in 160 characters or less, you probably don't want to hear what she has to say. "Because you're ugly" is less than 160 characters. So is "Because you cheated on me." "I still care about you but I fear that we have irreconcilable differences and I don't sense that you're willing to work through them" is more than 160 characters. Text is good for many, many things, but, seriously, it is not good for relationship post-mortems.

I actually disagree. if you can't say it succinctly, you're not being honest.

Maybe you could just abbreviate more? You didn't use "u" or "r"; "irreconcilable" could be "irrec" and "differences" could be "difs". "I don't sense that" could be "ur not".

"I lik u but we have irrec difs and ur not willin to work thru it" See? It can be done. BUT, deep conversations like this are never because the person WANTS a short answer. They want to talk about it.

My dad does this all the time. He wants to talk about deep meanings of life, and big things, all in a text. He would talk for hours about it and it isn't going to be resolved in a couple texts, for sure.

I say, if you have something that's easier to text, text it. But don't text conversations. Come on. SRSLY.

I haven't come by to see who's texting what to Leila's for awhile. This was a good post [and good group of comments] to come back to.

Thank you, JB! That's very kind of you to say.

Emily-- I love the idea of an ex texting me to say that we have "irrec difs." I'd be like, "Yeah... Um, I totally... know what you mean."
