Also: I had gotten the impression from other texts that "homie" pretty much means "friend." But then why say "U my homie,as well as my friend"? There must be some subtle difference between the two that I'm unaware of. Clue me in, Leila Texters!

Well, homies usually have to have a person's back, while friends might not.

I think that friends are basically friendly acquantances, while homies and peeps are closer buddies who will have your back (as kristin puts it) and are much more significant in your life.
I personally love the term "shorty" though- I believe it can either mean "child" or "girlfriend/boyfriend"
